At the end of February 2026, Mepha announced that there is currently a shortage of Emtricitabine-Tenofovir-Mepha®. This is currently the only PrEP product that can be prescribed and reimbursed by the OKP/AOS. At this stage, we do not know how long this shortage will last.
Until then, we recommend the following:
- Ask your GP to prescribe only one pack of PrEP per visit.
- PrEP users living near the border can ask their healthcare professional for a prescription for Emtricitabine-Tenofovir-Mepha® to be dispensed abroad. It is not guaranteed that health insurance providers will cover the costs in individual cases.
- Where possible, PrEP users may consider switching to PrEP-on-demand.
- The single-component preparations containing the active ingredients emtricitabine or tenofovir cannot be claimed through health insurance, just like the original product Truvada®.
- If your local pharmacy no longer stocks PrEP, it can currently still be ordered with a prescription from the online pharmacy Apotheke Schaffhauserplatz in Zurich through www.swissprep.ch. This pharmacy still has stock at the time of writing.
We will definitely keep you updated.
